We Remember You (Communion Song) :: New Song For Communion

last supper iconFor quite some time now I have wanted to compose a song specifically for Communion. Third Day has a great song (Communion), which I have used, and Matt Redman recently released a new one (Remembrance) written with Matt Maher, which I will be using in the future. However, none of these songs seemed to say everything that I wanted them to say about the subject of communion. I wanted a song that was as big as the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper itself, or at least one that aimed at being big. I wanted a song that was heavy (not that the other ones aren’t), a song that was weighty, a song that you didn’t just sing, you experienced. Hopefully this is it. What I like about Third Day’s song is it’s simple use of scripture, “This is the body|This is the blood|broken and poured out|For all of us.” What I appreciate about Redman’s song is it’s connection with the church’s historic expressions of the Eucharist, “Dying you destroyed our death|Rising you restored our life|Lord Jesus come in glory.” InWe Remember You I have attempted to do both. I have tried to weave scripture and biblical truth throughout the song, and I used some of the words from the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom for the ending.

I warn you now, it’s a long song, and the arrangement needs some work. I think if you listen to it, though you’ll get the general idea. Please give it a listen so it won’t be brand new when you come to church on Sunday. Learn the melody and sing it out this Sunday and encourage those around you with the words.

The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (ESV)

Lyrics:

Verse 1

This bread is more than just bread

It’s the body that was broken for mankind

This wine is more than just wine

It’s the blood that was poured out for my life

Pre-Chorus

Here in this communion We offer up to you

Thankful hearts of worship We remember you

Chorus

Hallelujah we remember Hallelujah we proclaim

Hallelujah we remember You bore all our shame

Hallelujah we remember Hallelujah we proclaim

Hallelujah we remember We glorify your name

Verse 2

This cup is a covenant of grace

That you established for us when you died

This meal is the fellowship of love

It’s the sharing in the body of Christ

Pre-Chorus

Here in this communion We offer up to you

Thankful hearts of worship We remember you

Chorus

Hallelujah we remember Hallelujah we proclaim

Hallelujah we remember You bore all our shame

Hallelujah we remember Hallelujah we proclaim

Hallelujah we remember We glorify your name

We glorify your name

Bridge 1

This bread This blood This death This love

This cross This man This loss This lamb

This bread This blood This death This love

This cross This man This loss This lamb

Chorus

Hallelujah we remember Hallelujah we proclaim

Hallelujah we remember You bore all our shame

Hallelujah we remember Hallelujah we proclaim

Hallelujah we remember We glorify your name

Bridge 2

This bread This blood This death This love

This cross This man This loss This lamb

The communion of the saints It’s the presence of Christ

It’s the unity of brokenness It’s the very bread of life

The communion of the saints It’s the presence of Christ

It’s the unity of brokenness It’s the very bread of life

We remember We remember

We remember you We remember you

Ending

Christ our God You were crucified but you conquered death by death

Save us now O Son of God who rose from the dead

Holy God you dwell among your saints Your kingdom is forever

Open up our eyes so we can understand the mystery of your grace

To you we sing Alleluia To you we sing Alleluia

We remember you
